
Historic Church Cemetery
First Presbyterian was the first church in
Anderson to have a cemetery for the town.
The earliest burial was in 1839 and the last
burial in 1978. There are 411 visibly marked graves.
Many unidentified confederate soldiers are laid to
rest there as well as famous South Carolinians like
James Lawrence Orr, a former state senator, governor
and circuit judge; and Judge Joseph Newton Whitner
and his wife, Elizabeth - - Donors of the land where
the present church and cemetery are located.
With the help of Jim and Delle Kelly and a host of
volunteers, a booklet entitled Cemetery Transcriptions,
First Presbyterian Church, was compiled in 1981 with
a map of the cemetery and names of the people buried
there in the historic cemetery.
